World Sanskrit Day is celebrated annually on the day of Shraavana Poornima (full moon) to mark the importance of the ancient Sanskrit language. On August 31, 1897, Thomas Edison received a patent for the kinetographic camera, “a certain new and useful Improvement in Kinetoscopes,” the forerunner of the motion picture film projector.

On this day in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Neutrality Act, which reached his desk in the form of a congressional joint resolution. The president called the document an “expression of the desire … to avoid any action which might involve [the United States] in war.”

William G. Cobb demonstrated the world's first solar-powered automobile at the General Motors auto show on this day. The 15-inch “Sunmobile” had 12 photoelectric cells built into it. Sunlight falling on these cells produced an electric current, powering a tiny motor that made the car move. To this day, a commercially successful solar-powered vehicle has not been produced.

On August 31, 1991, the Republic of Uzbekistan officially declared its independence from the USSR, which by that time had already collapsed. This declaration was only the initial step in the formation of a new country on the world map, however. - In 1997, Prince Charles brought Princess Diana home for the last time, escorting the body of his former wife to a Britain that was shocked, grief-stricken and angered by her death in a Paris traffic accident earlier that day.

- In 2005, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin reported “a significant number of dead bodies in the water” following Hurricane Katrina; Nagin ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts and to instead stop increasingly hostile thieves.

- In 2016, on Mexican soil for the first time as the Republican presidential nominee, a firm but measured Donald Trump defended the right of the United States to build a massive border wall along its southern flank, standing up for the centerpiece of his immigration plan during a joint press conference with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

- In 2019, a gunman carried out a shooting rampage that stretched ten miles between the Texas communities of Midland and Odessa, leaving seven people dead before police killed the gunman outside a movie theater in Odessa.
